In the mid-Edo period, Shoeki Ando developed an innovative philosophy while making a living as a physician in Hachinohe. His ideas about working towards a society in which nature and humans are in harmony are still alive to this day, and he is said to be the world’s first ecologist. In the archives housed in a restored rice granary belonging to the adjacent “Hachitsuru” sake brewery, documents that have been restored through digital technology, such as his “Hachinohe Domain Diary”, can be viewed.
