The Great Gingko Tree of Kubo is estimated to be 1000 years old, 27 meters (88.6 ft) tall, and have a trunk circumference of 13.28 m (43.6 ft). The tree was designated a prefectural natural monument by the Aomori government in 2018 and it is one of the biggest gingko trees in the prefecture.
At the tree’s trunk sits a small shrine. The shrine is called the ichou-daimyou shrine and is said to house the spirit of the tree. The tree has been long treasured by the people of the town and become one of its symbols. During a terrible storm in 2011 part of the tree broke and fell. The tip of the felled portion was cut off and saved, while both the roots and the aerial roots remained intact. The tree recovered and the semi-attached portion continued to grow along with the main tree, giving the pair an interesting overall shape and character.
