Motoko Hani was born in Hachinohe in 1873. She is considered Japan’s First female journalist, and founded the magazine called Fujin no tomo (Women’s friend), and established the Jiyu Gakuen Private School for Girls, and the national Tomo no Kai orginization. The Memorial house sits on a small hill overlooking the Hachinohe downtown area, and was opened in 1991 by the Tomo no Kai organization to mark its 60 year anniversary. Inside the house visitors can walk through photographs and artifacts from Motoko Hani’s life and learn about her ideals, endeavors, and achievements.
